현대 미술이라고 종종 번역되고 있는 contemporary art. 정확히 어떤 의미인지 몰라서 베이징 798 거리를 걷는 동안 동현이와 이야기를 많이 했다.
정확한 뜻은 다음과 같다.
...와 같은 시대의(with), 그당시의, 현대의, 최신의, 같은시대의 신문(잡지등), contemporarily ad.
좀더 자세히 살펴보면,
[比較] synchronous, simultaneous, coincident
synchronous는 같은 속도로 똑같이 진행하는 것, 거듭 일어나는 것 또는 일반적으로 짧은 동안의 일치를 가리킨다.
two pendulums so adjusted that their movements are synchronous/ The timers in the gun turrets and in fire control room were synchronous.
simultaneous는 동시에, 동시점에 작용하는 것을 말한다.
The two shots were simultaneous.
coincident는 무슨 일이 동시에 일어나는 것, 때로는 현저하게 또는 공교롭게 때가 일치하는 것을 나타낸다.
His sudden departure was suspiciously coincident with the stranger''s arrival.
contemporary, contemporaneous는 동시에 존재하는 것을 의미하지만, 위의 세 말과 다른 것은 나타내는 때가 명확하지 않아서(indefinite), 사람의 경우에는 일생, 사건의 경우에는 한 시대를 가리키는 수도 있다.

하나의 시대를 나타내는 말로 지금 이 순간의 덩어리를 표현하는 말에 가장 가깝지 않나 싶다. 내 생각에는 현대라는 번역하는 것보다 당대라는 번역이 더 와 닿았다.
